This is not a popular topic, but Jesus mentioned hell more than anyone else in the Bible. Why is it so important? Because without hell, without the wrath of God, he cannot express his love towards his covenant people. Just to ask the question, who will repay justice for those blood, which was wrongly shed, innocently killed, wrongly murdered, and worse still, a whole massacre or genocide, how will that blood be paid?
Genesis 4:10-11 (ESV) 10 And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. Abel’s blood cried out to God, and God cursed Cain who murdered his brother Abel.
A God who doesn’t show wrath when its needed, righteous, is a weak God. Why?
God didn’t just randomly capriciously impose judgement. Look at the judgment God poured upon Egypt, the 7 plagues that struck Egypt was not random at all, they were unleashed by God to judge the gods of Egypt.
Exodus 12 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord.
That’s the judgement of God against the gods of Egypt.
Romans 1:22-25 (ESV) 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
This is God judging all those who turned to idolatry. There is a huge consequence to that, as God saying he gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity and dishonoring their bodies. Now this can be confusing because in modern days, there is no such thing as images like mortal birds and animals that we bow down to as idols, but rather our idols are the invisible imagery or things that we hang on to with higher regards and worth than the creator God. The relevant ones will be money which Jesus has spoken against the love of money many times, our career, fame, children, family, sex, power, anything that holds higher place in our lives than the God of heaven and earth is idolatry.
Then:
Romans 1:26-27 (ESV) 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Then God gave them up to dishonorable passions, women exchanged natural relations to contrary to nature, men turned to men committing shameless acts and received in themselves due penalty. That’s the judgment of God now in this world, not in the end time when there will be the judgement of heaven or hell, and when the devil, Satan, the serpent, will be thrown into burning lake of fire, hell.
Revelation 20:7-10 (ESV) 7 And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. 9 And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, 10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
There will be huge battle where Satan will march for the titanic battle like the sand of the sea and surround the camp of the saints, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them. Then the devil will be thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophets are and be tormented day and night forever and ever. It’s hard to go against God. The judgement is too severe for anyone to even imagine.
We have not preached wrath enough because we have been labeled as brimstone preachers who do that! So much so that it’s never or hardly preached but it’s a major doctrine in the OT and NT especially in Revelations on the wrath of God. It has a conjunction of sin and justice and God’s goodness! God will not leave his people under wickedness and evil, he pours out his judgement also to protect his godly folks!
In Sodom & Gomorrah, God waited for Lot and family to be out before pouring his judgment , but in the end time there will be no mitigation on his judgement. It will be final and frightening!
Ephesians 5:3-6 (ESV) 3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
Because of sexual immorality, all impurity, covetous or idolater, are the things that caused God to pour out his wrath upon the people who committed such disobedience. The wrath is not only poured out in the day of judgement in the end time, but it’s a present day judgement now while this is happening. If you look around Hollywood, big cities New York, etc., it makes you wonder is there wrath of God upon them now? They seem to continue to be sexually immoral, impurity of sort is extolled in our mainstream media which are overwhelmingly liberal, but the wrath of God is cranking away. Sons of disobedience are paying the price now, in one way or the other.
God is pouring out his wrath and will do so. It behooves is to take a second look and think through what that means to us today in our daily lives. Don’t let the invisible blind you and fool you, but it’s coming and it’s also happening! To heed is wise and to ignore is a fool.
Psalms 58:10-11 (ESV) 10 The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked. 11 Mankind will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth.”
God does judge on earth now.
