Why is Jesus still interceding for us in heaven when his redemption work is ‘finished”?

We all face tough times in this world. Our kids, families, spouse, parents, friends, and the world we live in today faces so much turmoil and uncertainty. We ourselves struggle sometimes at work, jobs, relationship with  others, disappointment in ministry, opening, etc. The list goes on.  Where do we get our help from? Well, the Lord Jesus is not done with us yet, he’s still laboring for us, helping us, for us to make it all the way to the finishing line when we will meet him in heaven in the end time, Parousia.

Romans 8:34 Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

One of the most moving moments after reading Jesus the High Priest by Richard Gaffin is that he continues to labor for us after he’s accomplished the hardest work for us on the cross in that violent death he bled to death for humanity. I thought that would have be an awesome reward in heaven celebrating with the Father, Spirit, and the angels for a long time before welcoming us actually physically into the eternal bliss of heavenly paradise. Actually his reward is us.

And not stopping working! He still is working away nonstop for us! Imagine that he’s seated on the right hand of God the Father on his throne, he is interceding for us now.

I have two questions. Why is he still interceding when all the job is done for the redemption of mankind? Second, he is God himself, the second person of the Trinity, so why does he need to pray to God? It’s like God the Son praying to God the Father. So what’s going on? And finally why is he still sweating it out after he’s accomplished a humanly impossible task, and heavenly impossible task?

He is interceding for us all, because he knows that we are not out of the wood, so to speak. In another words, we are like Israel delivered from Egyptian bondage and slavery, but not entered into the promised land, and are still in the desert, wilderness. We are exactly like that, we have been redeemed and saved by the blood of Christ once and for all, but we have not entered our promised land. Our salvation is not complete yet. It has started in the process, and that’s why the teaching on Hebrews is totally important.

Hebrews 4:1-2 (ESV) 1 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. — Let us fear, or let us worry!

We need help!  That’s a fact. How many Christians today don’t struggle. Struggle in life with trials, hardship is almost a prerequisite for maturity and flow into the will of God.

The parallel between Israel’s exodus story and our story now bears remarkable similarity, but our ending will be much better. Israel went through 40 years of tests in the desert, burning hot in the days, and cold in the nights. We are now going through some ‘hot’ season emotionally, spiritually, time in America too. Do we not sometimes argue with our spouse? Our loved ones? With our friends? Do we get discouraged when we see our ministry is not seeing open door? When we see our kids struggle? When we struggle with job? When we despair when we see racism that’s systemic? Covid Pandemic that ravaged thousands and thousands of deaths in US alone? Anyhow you get the point.

That’s why we need a high priest praying for us. Jesus knows that we are struggling in our journey to our promised land. And there is a verse that explains it well:

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,[f] Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Heb 4:14-16)

Jesus empathizes with our weaknesses because he himself was a man on earth and have been tempted in every way , just as we are, yet he did not sin. This is in itself very moving and touching that the transcendent Son of God willingly exposed himself to be tempted as a human in every way like us. This is almost unbecoming of him for the glorious one who holds the universe in his hands, should be exposed to discouragement, insults, mocks, sexual, danger temptations, all in his effort to save us to glory! Not only that he conquered them all. Look at the direct conflict between him and the devil in the wilderness after 40 days fast, at his weakest point.

Jesus fully understands our feelings and struggles in life, and he wants to support us. Jesus went through all these, just to be able to help us! Talking about love and friendship!

What does he do praying for us when he is God himself? He is praying for us as the High Priest, not as God, though he is. That’s the complex one because it will be a huge issue called Nicene Trinitarian theology, which I will be writing some other time.

Pertama undang-undang tidak dapat menjadikan kita sempurna. Undang-undang hanyalah bayangan perkara baik yang akan datang dan bukannya kenyataan. Itu bererti undang-undang bukan realiti. Itu hanya bayangan. Dan itulah sebabnya dalam PL, anda memerlukan persembahan berterusan setiap tahun untuk menyempurnakan mereka yang mendekat. (Ibr 10: 1) Oleh karena itu, Allah melakukan sesuatu yang tidak dapat dibayangkan dalam pikiran manusia, hanya akal ilahi yang dapat memahami hal ini, yang mencerminkan pikiran Tuhan yang berkorban dan murah hati.

Tuhan tidak menginginkan pengorbanan dan persembahan, kerana mereka tidak sempurna, hanya itu bayangan. Tuhan sedang mencari perkara yang sebenarnya. Dan itulah undang-undang Tuhan dimasukkan ke dalam hati kita dan ditulis dalam fikiran kita. Ini mustahil sebelum pengorbanan Kristus, semua ini adalah milik kita sekarang. Tidak lagi pemberontakan Israel yang keras kepala seperti di padang gurun Sinai.

Ibrani 10: 16-18 (ESV) 16 “Inilah perjanjian yang akan aku buat dengan mereka setelah hari-hari itu, menyatakan TUHAN: Aku akan meletakkan hukum-hukumku di hati mereka, dan menuliskannya di dalam pikiran mereka,” 17 lalu dia menambahkan , “Aku tidak akan mengingat lagi dosa-dosa mereka dan perbuatan mereka yang tidak sah.” 18 Di mana ada pengampunan ini, tidak ada lagi persembahan dosa.

Kerana perkara di atas, kita sekarang dapat menuliskan undang-undang di dalam hati kita. Itulah yang kita maksudkan bahawa iman kita adalah organik. Ini secara organik membentuk hati kita, bukan secara mekanis dari fikiran kita. Oleh itu kita melayani Tuhan dari hati kita, bukan kerana kita harus masuk ke syurga. Kami menyembah Tuhan dan ingin mematuhinya kerana dia mempunyai undang-undang di dalam hati kita, kerana pengorbanan di salib adalah Anak Tuhan bagi kita semua.

Tidak ada cara bagi siapa pun untuk mundur setelah mendengar narasi tentang apa yang Anak Tuhan bagi kita hanyalah manusia di muka bumi ini!

Jesus left heaven for earth and being sacrificed on earth is one compelling story

Jesus who emptied himself of all heavenly glory for earth and being scarified for humanity is one heck of compelling narrative to capture our hearts.

First the law cannot make us perfect. The law is only a shadow of the good things to come instead of the realities. That means the law is not the realities. It’s only a shadow. And that’s why in the OT, you would need continual offerings every year to make perfect those who draw near. (Heb 10:1) Now therefore God did something unimaginable in human minds, only the divine mind could even conceive of this, which reflects the sacrificial and generous mind of God.

Hebrews 10:5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. 7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”

God has not desired sacrifices and offerings, because they are not perfect, it’s only a shadow. God is looking for the real thing. The only to fulfil it, which is mind boggling, is found in Heb 10:5-7 God clearly says he doesn’t desire sacrifices and offerings, but a body God has prepared for Christ. That’s a stunning statement, and it does sound like too much, what on earth which Father will demand the body of his son to accomplish a task? But this is no normal task, it requires nothing less than the highest and utmost holy in heavens and on earth to accomplish it. And the response of the Son is even  more stunning and mind blowing, is only a remote comparison, that the Son Jesus Christ, responded, “Behold I have to come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book” The book here is the Scripture, the Word of God. In fact, ironically, Jesus is the Word of God. Therefore, Jesus to come into the world to be sacrificed is already written in the Logos, the Word of God, which is himself! How difficult to fathom this is? But in reality, “Beheld I have come to do your will, O God” is the man Jesus Christ, the Logos, the Word of God, is the divine Jesus. The duality of Jesus has been very confusing, but it manifested the utter most love and sacrifice of Jesus, and God to the world. The Trinity from all eternity has already planned all these out before the foundation of the world, that this is going to happen.

And Jesus being sacrificed in this world, is the only way to establish the new covenant:

Hebrews 10:16 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them and write them on their minds,”

By this once and for all by this ultimate sacrifice by the Son of God himself, we see a new covenant established between God and mankind. And that’s God’s laws are put in our hearts and written on our minds. This was impossible before the sacrifice of Christ, all these is ours now. No more the stubborn rebellion of Israel as in the wilderness of Sinai.

Hebrews 10:16-18 (ESV) 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” 17 then he adds,“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

Because of the above, we now can have the laws written in our hearts. That’s what we mean our faith is organic. Its organically form our hearts, not mechanically from our minds. Therefore we serve the Lord from our hearts, not because we have to get into heaven. We worship God and want to obey him because he’s got laws in our hearts, due to the once and for all sacrifice on the cross as the Son of God for us all.

Hebrews 10:23-25 (ESV) 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Because of that, we can confess of our hope without wavering, for God who promised is faithful. And lets us stir one another up to love and good works, and meet together, encouraging one another, all the more we see the Day drawing near.

There is no way for anyone to backslide after hearing that narrative of what the Son of God for us mere humans on this earth!

Pengkhotbah yang sesat telah masuk ke gereja-gereja Tuhan

Jude menulis sebuah wacana yang luar biasa tentang memperingatkan orang-orang Kristian untuk bertengkar dengan iman mereka kerana tidak bertuhan dalam penyamaran guru-guru yang cerdas. Jude mengatakan bahawa orang-orang ini telah merayap tanpa disedari (v3-4). Ini besar. Mereka tidak masuk melalui pintu depan dengan tanda-tanda besar, “Guru palsu”. Tidak, mereka sudah masuk. Soalan saya ialah bagaimana mereka merayap? Mereka mesti hampir seperti kita untuk dapat melakukan itu. The godless preachers have crept into God’s churches

Jude 1:3-4 (ESV) 3 Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Jude wrote an amazing discourse about warning Christians to contend for their faith because of godless teachers that crept into the church in the disguise of savvy teachers. Jude says these guys have crept in unnoticed (v3-4). This is big. They didn’t come in through the front door with big signs, “False teachers”. No, they have crept in. My question is how did they creep in? They have to be almost like us to be able to do that. I mean they can’t come as wolves, but they come as wolves with sheep skin so to speak. But how? Look at what they have done? They pervert the grace of our God into sensuality (v4) and deny our Lord Jesus Christ. How? These are huge major strike at Christianity. No Mickey Mouse stuff! If we look at v7

Jude 1: 7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

This is not light, its eternal fire punishment, a fire that will never extinguish, a very severe judgement of God, a torment of soul. That’s how they turn the grace of our God into sensuality which is defined as the enjoyment, expression, or pursuit of physical, especially sexual, pleasure, or Dictionary defines as the enjoyment, expression, or pursuit of physical, especially sexual, pleasure. That ties in v7 that talks about the sexual immorality and unnatural desire. So if you look around the churches today, just how many of them have degraded into accepting gay marriage and homosexuality? From PCA to Anglicans, United Methodists, and even Baptists and the list goes on long, but may I add that the Pentecostal churches seem to be able rise above this sensuality, amazingly, this does tell you something about the Holy Spirit gifts emphasis kind of churches over theology heavy churches.

How do they do it? In here I would just say that this takes theology debate, smooth talks, and these godless folks that crept into churches unnoticed are theologians that produces books, preach on pulpits, argue from hermeneutics, and mixing with social justice. Its always a mixed bag, mixing some form of good with the evil. (Thats how Satan did it with Eve in Genesis ). They teach that you don’t hate the sins, but hate the system, referring to the social injustice that’s such a big topic these days. Everyone is wooed and awed by their compassion for the poor, marginalized, and the minorities, that they creep right into our doctrines, even to the extent of denying our only Master & Lord Jesus Christ. How do they defy Christ? By calling him to be an exceptionally good guru, but not the Son of God, a skill tactic that’s widely used by the progressive theologians in the name of science and and reality. Many non-scholars but nonetheless preachers are catching on fast, I mean real fast, to the detriment and destruction of these liberal revisionist bible kind of churches, in a way that we are all afraid to call out, what Jude calls “blaspheming the glorious one”. People think you blaspheme with only foul language and curse at the Mighty One, which is already happening rampantly among Americans by cursing by the name of Jesus, innocently or conveniently even among Christians and definitely traditional churches. (A sad saga that causes every Christ lover, Christ beloved ones to well up in tears. But this beyond that simplicity. This is denying Christ as the Son of God, a good man like Buddha or other gurus, who exemplify kindness and love.) But no, it more subtle and dangerous that cursing which is upfront, but a relabelling, and a revision of who Jesus is. Calling gay marriage right, cohabitation and formication right, any way thats suitable and convenient to them.

Jude v12-13 (ESV) 12 These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.

The description of these ones as hidden reefs at love feasts, shepherds feeding themselves, waterless cloud, fruitless trees, twice dead, uprooted, wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame, wondering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness been reserved forever (v12-13). With such dire dark warnings by Jude, no Christian should ever miss reading the book of Jude as it speaks directly to the soul of modern western churches in particular, and in Asia, Europe, Africa, S America too. We are right in the midst of it, and the saddest thing is many Christians are unaware but being deceived and formed by them in the way culture defines the church, rather than the other way around often times in many churches.

With all these, Jude exhorts all the beloved in Christ to build ourselves up in the most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit, keeping ourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesu Christ that leads to eternal life. Have mercy on those who doubt and save them by snatching them out of the fire; and show mercy to others with fear, hating even the garments disdained by the flesh. That means we are to evangelize, snatch them for hell fire, show them mercy with fear, because they can too stain us if we don’t watch out. Also, hating even the garment stained by the flesh which means hate their sins, don’t tolerate them and sit quiet because of the cultural forces that tame you and shuts you down. (v20-23).

Dark Forces is unleashed

-Against cosmic powers of darkness and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm

Racism is deeply embedded in America for centuries from the slavery days in the deep south especially, and even today’s America is still riddled with the tension between cops and the blacks as numerous incidents that have resulted the anguish and deep anger among the African American community, and not only them, but also many minorities communities like Asians, especially the millennial generation, and also the whites too. In one word, this can be summarized as ‘injustice’. Injustice has been done to the communities, and it’s a complex web of financial, family without father figures, and other social related problems. But recently the forces that have ravished America, first and foremost is the Corona Virus that had killed 100,000 American over a period of few months. The scale of destruction is unprecedented, and the jobs that were lost into millions, the deaths incurred all added up to devastation. And now the just killing of George Floyd a black America at the hands of a white cop and video recorded, has just inflamed America. The deep-seated anger towards racism, hatred towards police forces treating the blacks over the years in some specific incidents unfortunately, have all erupted. What’s worse, outside forces added to the looting and violence that ravished America big cities. My point is that we can’t just try to figure all this out with human reasoning and forgetting the hands behind at a higher level is the forces of darkness. The cosmic powers of darkness. The devil’s undermining the social stability of our society. The forces of evil marching against humanity. It’s the call of churches to arise and pray unto our God and push them back.

Ephesians 6

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

Repent, Lament, and Pray; Love One Another; Love our Neighbors; Proclaim the Gospel—all these are so very important and form the heartbeat of the word of God.

Need to add one more-Spiritual Warfare

The war that we fight is a cosmic warfare. There is no way we just deal with it at a human level. It has to be elevated to the higher cosmic level. We will pray and wrestle. The word used is wrestle, not even fight. Wrestling is a tense word. Jacob wrestled with God. Jesus wrestled with the temptations of darkness at Garden of Gethsemane where he dropped sweats of blood in his struggle against the temptations of passing over the cup of sufferings, humiliations, and eventual death. That was the ultimate highest cosmic battle, and frankly that battle’s determined our human destiny. The outcome of that wrestling is so huge that the entire universe wellbeing depended on it, or the complete destruction of it to hell fire.

2 Chronicles 20:17 You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, and the Lord will be with you.” The battle is the Lord’s.

How we wish we could hear that from the Lord in America today, as we suffered tragedies after the other. The nation is badly shaken, but our resolve is stronger. But you see good things don’t come easy. Usually it takes a mighty fight, struggle. It comes at a cost. This may just spell a great harvest and revival we can see in America today. It will not be easy, but not impossible. For God wants us to be strong in the inner man, not weak to be blown by winds of forces easily. Christians must stand and arise to call upon the Lord to arise and fight the battle for America. It will not be apparent, but you think about it, the immorality unleashed by this nation is unprecedented and painful to imagine. This speaks of the depravity of mankind, and for some reason, America seems to epitomize the darkness and light too. We are at a crucial juncture of what could be a great revival we have seen. We long for the day people will gather around to worship God for days and nights and not leaving. Remember in the south of America (I will dig that out), it has been amazing how God brought revival to the land of Wales, the heartland of America, and parts of Asia, Korea etc., and yes, he can and will do it again. We must press on and realize this is a warfare, and not forgetting that we have our duty and calling to rise and seek the Lord to heal this land and protect America from such dark forces. First of all, we must embrace the mentality and theology of the supernatural. Just like the Bible.

Psalm 10

12 Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand;
    forget not the afflicted.
13 Why does the wicked renounce God
    and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”?
14 But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation,
    that you may take it into your hands;
to you the helpless commits himself;
    you have been the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer;
    call his wickedness to account till you find none.

16 The Lord is king forever and ever;
    the nations perish from his land.
17 O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
    you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
18 to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed,
    so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.

Break the arm of the wicked and evil doers. This is an assertive prayer. This is attack and not passive prayer.

Arise o God, forget us not…. this is reminding God. To move us to the next realm. It’s a prayer by faith. Strong man shall take it by force. It’s not a weak prayer. Standing by a strong God, a powerful God, we need strong prayer warriors, that will stand in the gap and call upon the Lord.
