Amazing day today!

We are glad to have Rachel back last night and it was wonderful after her 3 weeks absence from home, noticably our Costco shopping ‘s needs decreases. But today, I got the good news that I have been offered an awesome job that is beyond my wildest dream. God has spoken and acted and I feel so humbled knowing that He loves me and cares for me. It really is beyond what I dare to hope in this kind of economy! Surely our God is faithful and his love reaches beyond the heavens!

Also on the same day today, I got the good news from New York for Urban Mission center that they have finally (after a long 3 days) firmed up a good offer for us to host our Hope N American Camp 2011 for 150-200 people at a costs within budget and that includes food, lodging, auditorium hall, breakout rooms!! Totally blown me away as this is NYC!! I was given 1 month to finalize the deal and time is clicking away as the deadline looms at Aug 5, literally I have 12 days left to cut the deal! Thank you Lord, our folks are coming to New York city next summer! 🙂 Love you Lord.

God’s infinite love and holiness

Last Sunday I preached on Abraham’s Prayer for the City of Sodom & Gomorah. He appealed to God repeatedly for the wicked cities at that time. He was like heckled God, pestered God in a most bold courageous way unseen. God accepted his petition repeatedly like 5 times. Most conservative Christians will think that he is irreverant of God but in actuality, Abraham said ” he wa sbut dust and ashes”. He was humbled and took risk with the Almighty God for his love for the cities. Though jhe knew that the very cities he was appealing for could actually kill him if he visited the cities.

Abraham knew the infinite holiness and love of God. He knew God loves the cities so much and on that premise he appealed not to destroy the cities on account of 50 righteous people or 40, 30, and eventually 10. He knew God loves so much. But he also knows God is infinite righteous and holy. He will carry out all things in His holiness. When we pray to God, we need to know these 2 great attributes of God. He is infinitely loving and holy. That we can be bold and at the same time intimate with God and risk taking with God. Honestly, no one can pray the way Abraham prayed to God unless you are a very good friend of God, very intimate with God. Abraham was God’s friend, good friend, he was intim, ate with God.

That’s the kind of generation we want to raise and be like-intimacy with God, passionate for God and the people, and risk taking!

Praying in the Spirit

One of the things that impacted me from the 2010 Hope North American camp  that just concluded in Los Angeles is “Praying in the Spirit.” There is real power in praying in tongues.  1 Cor 14:18-19   18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

That’s amazing! The foremost theologian and the foremost apostle of all time  said he  thanks God that he speaks in tongues more than all of us! And here we are, the body of Christ divided over speaking in tongues. There is power in speaking in tongues.
After the NA Camp, I started praying in tongues more seriously, and I feel edified as the scriptures says: 1 Cor 14:4-54 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

Therefore I will keep doing that in private as much as possible. I know that Cho Yongi, the pastor of Yoida Church of Korea, (the laregst church in the world at 800,000 members) said that the most powerful thing he has is praying for hours daily before God. We are always looking for a model for growth, and here it is, a humble servant of God, primarily basing his church on a “prayer” model .

In the book of Acts 2, Acts 1:14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women, Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. That’s what they did just before the moment the Lord poured out the Holy Spirit upon them and they all were baptized in the Holy Spirit!

Constantly in prayer. Joined together. See those words! Harvest won’t come and the power of God won’t be released without intense prayer. Jesus prayed all the time. He got up early in the morning to pray daily. The apostles prayed constantly and the Lord visited them by the mighty rushing wind and tongues of fire with tongues! Next it was full of sign and wonders and miracles!
I believe God will break open the flood gates of New York City once we pray hard enough together and in unity in Spirit! We can tear down the spiritual stronghold of the enemies. God will pour out His Holy Spirit upon Hope New York Church! And New York City! Let us pray for the city!

Great N American Camp in Los Angeles-2010 July “The Core Values”

My family and I and our church all had an awesome time in the North American Camp held in Loyolla University from July 1-July 5. I feel energized by God to pray more intensely, especially in the Spirit, ie speaking in tongues because of the challenge and message of Ps. Simon Eng. I have ever since been doing prayers in tongues for more than 30 minutes a day in the morning, during train rides to and fro work,  and also in my lunch hour–where I have a prayer walk by the beautiful Hudson River facing the Statue of Liberty. I sense in my heart that this IS a spiritual warfare that we all face, and we all sense an excitement about what God is going to do in Hope New York church these coming months. I know that the devil is going to try to knock us with problems and strife and misunderstanding, but I also know that the Lord is going to give us victories. But it is  going to take the commitment of the leadership to set the spiritual tone of the church in order to advance. The enemy is trying to destroy the church, stopping people from coming to salvation in Jesus Christ. We stand in this moment as we seek to break the stronghold and the oppositions that we face in New York City. Indeed, this is our day and moment to seize!

God is with us. Like the angel told Joshua:

Josh. 5:13        Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” 14  “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?” 15 The commander of the LORD’S army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

When we prayer, we all need to know that we are standing on holy ground. Our first priority in prayer should be to understand and appreciate God and His holiness, and not simply pour out our wants and desires.

Sermon

I am so encouraged by a sister in our church who thanked me for working hard on my sermons and for preaching sermons that are uplifting and encouraging even in tough passages. I thank God for His grace for me, and I will continually press on to reach higher goals in God. For God’s word is sharper than a doubled edged sword and is alive! It is like fire burning in our hearts. I must bring out God’s word to bless, encourage, rebuke and equip! Amen!

Hope New York Church

Hope New York Church is special and unique to me. It’s the starting point of God’s call for me to plant churches in the Northeast. Back in March 2008, I heard a call from God to go to the Northeast to start a church while we were in Irvine, CA.  We were very happy and comfortable in Irvine, so it was extremely difficult for the family and I to move away from California and leave behind our community and dear friends. After months of struggling, we finally accepted God’s calling in our lives and cast away our selfish desires, moving across the country to Long Island, New York. Hope New York was founded in September 2008 with about 10 people. The church has grown and matured since then and we continue to experience God’s tremendous grace and love as He teaches, challenges, guides, uplifts, and strengthens us these one and a half years in New York. Not including the incredibly cold, freezing winter weather and the usual subway rush, life has just changed so much for my family and I, coming from the laid-back atmosphere and incredible weather of Southern California. No regrets, but only a heart of thanksgiving. I have been so incredibly blessed and stretched in ways I never imagined before, and I feel the sky is the limit for people who have the faith in God and persevere and willingly submit to God’s plan. Remember, in Christ all things are possible!

Hello world!

Welcome to my blog starting on December 31, 2009, the last day of 2009. Very aptly put, we do need to conserve and present wisdom for next year 2010 which starts tomorrow!

I was reading about the history of the church and was amazed to find out that the Jesuits (the most zealous and influential Order of Catholicism) arrived in Japan in 1500 and within 27 months won over 700 Japanese people in their newly founded Catholic church! 700! In less than two and a half years! (And in 30 years, they had 150 Jesuits working in Japan and had won over 150,000 people to the Catholic Church!)

That (the 2.5 years harvest) is more than the combined efforts of the entire North American Hope Churches for the last 15 years! And we’re teaching in a place where the majority of the people are Christians! (Hope North America is now less than 200 people.) Whereas Japan has always been hostile towards the Christian faith. So what are we missing in Hope America? It’s like we haven’t contextualize enough in America.  To a certain extent it’s true. But to a large extent it’s wrong!

I believe that pastors need to be further equipped in the American way. To plant a church we need a good team. Though people like Francis Xavier just single handedly started missionary churches in Asia and India. Amazing!

For many years we wish for more local Americans to catch our Hope vision and start planting churches in North America for the Hope movement. The reality is that the vast majority of our church members are Asian immigrants. It seems that culture and race play a large part in drawing the type of people into your church.

There are many models in America. The Calvinist Baptist or reformed Baptist evangelical churches have made great inroad in church growth and plants. Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York reflects a whole lot of cultural teachings that we should learn and improve from. The Exponential Conference featuring the largest church planting conference in America has also a whole lot to offer that we can learn from in contextualized church planting.

May God bless Hope NY & Hope North American Churches.
